Gold jewelry FAQs
I just found a gold necklace I haven’t worn
for years. How can I improve its luster?
Like anything, gold will not look like new forever. However the good
news is that there is not a lot of work that needs to be done in order
to be able to help make the gold look like new again. Really, all one
needs is some warm water, a mild dish detergent and a soft toothbrush.
By mixing the water and soap and scrubbing the solution on to the necklace
with the toothbrush, one should be able to help restore the necklace
to look similar to how it looked when it was first received.
I’m thinking about buying some gold earrings for my girlfriend,
but I’m not sure which kind to buy. Any suggestions?
A lot of this depends on the preference of the woman who will be wearing
the earrings, but a good general rule is that loop earrings that are
purchased should always be small loops. It is rare that a woman will
wear very large hooped earrings. Also, if a woman wants to draw attention
to her neck, she may want to wear dangling earrings. On the other hand,
if she wants to draw attention to the shape of her face, hoop earrings
are often worn.
What is the deal with karats? What’s the difference between
10-krat gold and 24-karat gold?
The karats in gold are determined by the other substances that are included
along with the gold in creating earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.
The higher the karat, the more pure the gold is. For example, a 10-karat
necklace will have more non-gold material in it than a 24-karat gold
necklace would. It is hard to find anything that is completely made
of pure gold because gold is malleable and it is hard for gold to keep
its form without another substance to support it.
