Gold chains
Even though most gold chains are cleaned in a similar
way, there are a few differences in the way they are cleaned. The differences
in how these are cleaned are determined by the way these chains interlock.
First the similarities: All kinds of gold chains should be cleaned
by using a mixture of a mild detergent and warm water. Similarly, a
tooth brush or other similar substance should be used to brush off any
excess debris from the gold chains.
However, one of the differences comes into play when the actual applying
of the solution is done. If the chain is full of small or large looping
links, it is fine to take this chain and lie it in the solution for
several minutes. After it has sat in the solution for a couple of minutes,
it can be removed and then scrubbed with a toothbrush.
But if a chain that has a number of thin, interlocking strands is to
be cleaned, perhaps it would be better to clean these chains by simply
placing the toothbrush in the solution and cleaning them individually
instead of immersing the gold chains in the solution themselves.
The reason for this is because those gold chains that have small interlocking
strands have more difficulty drying out. If a chain does not dry properly,
it can become corroded and lose much of its worth.
Regardless of how one chooses to clean his or her gold chains, the chains
should always be completely dry before they are placed back into a jewelry
box.
